Rep. Carnahan raising cash in DC days before primary

“Join Congressman Carnahan for one final breakfast before his primary,” reads the header above this invitation sent to one of our sources to a July 30 breakfast for Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.). But Carnahan doesn’t have much competition in the primary on August 3. His Democratic competition have barely raised $200 or less, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Carnahan, in contrast, already has more than $858,000 in his war chest.

The bigger concern is the race in November. While Cooks Report rates the race as “likely Democratic,” the main GOP contender, Edward Martin, has raised a substantial amount, more than $582,000. Martin has been hitting Carnahan hard, most recently filing a complaint with the U.S. Federal Election Commission (FEC) charging the congressman with directing his campaign money to a holding company he owns, which Carnahan denies.
