Lawmakers Sing Along with Swift to Raise Cash

Looking to start August on a fundraising high note, seven members of Congress have fundraisers scheduled at a Taylor Swift concert at the Verizon Center next week. The Nashville songstress has two sold out shows on August 2 and August 3.

Six members of Congress will be attending the August 2 performance. Republican senator John Thune, R-S.D, will join Republican representatives Jo Bonner, R-Ala., Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., Tom Price, R-Ga., and Kay Granger, R-Texas, in the Swift sing-along. Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C,. is also scheduled to fundraise at the Swift show. The invitation to join the co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition features a distraught looking Swift and suggests invitees bring their son or daughter to join them at the show.

The following night on August 3, Swift will return to the stage, this time with only one lawmaker in attendance. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., is the only member of congress scheduled to attend the August 3 concert.

This is not the first time lawmakers have seen Swift as a fundraising draw. In June last year, Reps. Gregg Harper, R-Miss., Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and Tom Price all held fundraisers at a Swift concert at the Verizon center. Rep. Price apparently enjoyed her show enough to fundraise around her again this year.

Tickets to the show are currently sold out, but can be found for as little as $55. The privilege of rocking out to Swift in the company of a member of Congress however carries a price. Tickets to these fundraisers run from $1,000 for two individual tickets with Kay Granger to $3,500 for two PAC tickets with John Thune.

Editor’s Note: After a phone call from the artist’s publicist, we would like to add that Taylor Swift, Messina Group or the Verizon Center have no involvement in the fundraiser.

Spring break for pols: Raising money outside D.C.

Many lawmakers are taking advantage of the warm spring weather by holding short vacation-style fundraisers outside the beltway.

Senator Jim DeMint, R-S.C., has invited constituents to a trip to South Carolina from April 9 to 10, for a fundraiser aptly named the “Spring Escape to South Carolina.” DeMint is asking for the donation of $3,000 per PAC and $1,500 per Individual.

At the same time, Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. John Larson will travel far from his home state of Connecticut to host a Napa Valley Wine Tasting Weekend to benefit his leadership PAC, Synergy PAC. The weekend includes a bocce tournament, vineyard tour, wine tasting, dinner and breakfast with Larson. His invitation calls for $5,000 donations per PAC.

Not to be outdone, Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, will hold her 8th annual Fiesta Fundraiser in Fort Worth from April 11 to April 13. Attendees can choose one of three packages that include golf and breakfast, lunch and dinner.  She requests $3,000 per PAC and $2,000 per individual as the maximum donation.

Genentech lobbyists hosted fundraisers

Lobbyists representing Genentech hosted at least four fundraisers for members of Congress who used language drafted by the company for insertion in the congressional record, shows an analysis of invitations collected in Party Time’s database.

The New York Times writes “Statements by more than a dozen lawmakers were ghostwritten, in whole or in part, by Washington lobbyists working for Genentech, one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies.”

Lobbyists for Roche, which acquired Genentech in March of 2009, have hosted events for at least 26 members of Congress since the merger, according to Party Time data. FireDogLake’s Marcy Wheeler has identified 18 members of Congress (Dems here, Republicans, here) who relied on the Genentech language . At least four of those elected officials show up linked to the Genentech hosted fundraisers.

Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) was scheduled to attend a breakfast fundraiser at the Phoenix Park Hotel on May 7.  The event was hosted by lobbyists David Jones and former Senate Finance Committee staff director James Gould, who count Roche as clients.

Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) held a fundraising breakfast at Bistro Bis on September 17. Lobbyist hosts included Darin Gardner and Anna Sagely, who lobby exclusively for Hoffman-La Roche,  as well as lobbyists Mat Lapinski, Chris Myrick, and Christine Pellerin, who have Roche on their client lists.

Darin Gardner and Christine Pellerin, legislative assistant to former Congressman Henry Bonilla (R-TX), also hosted Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX) for breakfast at Bistro Bis, also in May of this year.

Finally, Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX) held a cocktails and cigars fundraiser for Women Impacting the Nation, a project of her leadership committee Common Sense Common Solutions, on September 21. More than two dozen lobbyists hosted the event, four of whom represent Roche:  Darin Gardner, Christine Pellerin, Anna Sageley and Mat Lapinkski–the same lobbyists responsible for the Conaway and Poe events.

Also of note: Kevin Connor of LittleSis.org connects Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), co-sponsor to a pharma friendly measure in the healthcare bill, to the mess via former legislative aid Nick Kolovos, who now lobbies on behalf of Genentech. Mark Kadesh, former chief of staff first to Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) and Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA), and now a Genentech lobbyist, was one of four hosts at a July 16 breakfast for Eshoo.

Sweating Out Contributions

Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX) will be hosting a Spa Afternoon at the W Hotel in DC later today.

According to the invitation, guests have a fair shot at getting their money’s worth.  $500 to attend or $1,500 for PAC hosts will land guests upwards of three hours at the Bliss Spa where massage packages range from $70 for a 30 minute rapid rub™ to $235 for a 105 minute “deep tissue treatment.” (See a full spa menu on Bliss’ terrible incredible pun-filled website here).

While many golf outings are billed as “golf and spa weekend” packages, today’s fundraiser is unique in that Granger is ditching the golf  aspect entirely.  The event is one of only two spa-only functions in the Party Time database.

Reps. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) and Sue Myrick (R-NC) are also listed as guests on the invitation.  Emerson is the only other member of Congress in our database to host a spa-only event.
